Acupuncture needles are very fine – about the size of two human hairs – so treatment is very gentle and relaxing. Sensations can range from a mild tingling to a dull ache on insertion. Most people feel deeply relaxed during treatment.
You can visit Mary for most of the same reasons you’d visit your GP. Some of the common reasons are: chronic pain, hormonal health, digestive issues, poor sleep, anxiety and depression, fertility, chronic fatigue, pregnancy support, asthma, hayfever, cancer treatment support, long covid and more.
As with any healthcare, there are no guarantees, but most people experience positive change after a few treatments. Acupuncture treatment is cumulative, so a course of five regular treatments is ideal at first as it gives the best chance for improvement. From there we will discuss progress together, and consider spacing out treatments accordingly, however you would like to manage things. You can turn to acupuncture as often as you need, it’s a fantastic tool to support us through everything life has to throw at us. People also choose acupuncture for prevention and health maintenance.
Acupuncture is very safe to receive alongside conventional care in almost all cases. Before you start, we will discuss any conventional diagnosis you may have and what treatment/medications you are taking in order to be sure it is appropriate for you to receive treatment. Sometimes you might need to get consent from your doctor or health professional before starting treatment. In many cases, acupuncture can support your conventional care, for example, by helping to manage side effects of treatment or medications such as chemotherapy, antidepressants and weight loss injections.
No! Some people have a diagnosed medical condition whilst others have had investigations that show no sign of organic disease, and others simply don’t feel themselves. Most people have multiple concerns or niggles they’d like to address, ranging in severity, and often find several complaints improve at the same time when receiving Five Element acupuncture. It is a holistic medicine which treats the whole person, getting to the route problem and aiming for overall balance/homeostasis. In a one-to-one setting, we have plenty of time to discuss all your concerns in detail, there is no rush or need to focus on just one issue- so feel free to bring a shopping list!
Very often we will work with points on your arms and legs, however, sometimes you might need to remove items of clothing (never underwear) in order to get to points on your torso for example. Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal, but we will always have towels and blankets to hand. You will always be asked for consent before needling any points, and you can say no to any part of treatment you don’t feel comfortable with.
